Retail development: sectors undergoing change

France's retail sector plays a central role in the national economy, accounting for around 10% of GDP and employing nearly 3 million people. However, its performance varies greatly according to segment, region and consumer trends, with marked disparities in the value of retail outlets depending on the sector in question... At a time when traditional retailing is facing challenges such as competition from e-commerce, changing buying patterns and pressure on margins, valuation is becoming an essential strategic lever. Understanding economic indicators, profitability margins and sector dynamics is essential for accurately estimating the value of a business.

A sector with variable geometry: growth and performance by segment

According to INSEE, retail sales rose by +7.8% between 2019 and 2023. However, this average increase masks significant differences between segments. Food retailing recorded near-stagnation, with growth of just +0.2%, while specialized retailing, such as home furnishings (+12%) and electronics (+15%), clearly came out on top. Sales of health and wellness products also rose significantly (+14%), buoyed by increased demand for these products since the pandemic.

By contrast, the clothing and footwear sector continues to struggle, with growth limited to +0.7% over the same period. The number of stores fell by almost 8% between 2019 and 2023, mainly due to the rise of major online sales platforms and changes in consumer habits.

Sales margins: a key indicator of profitability

Gross margins in the retail sector vary widely from sector to sector. On average, retail outlets will post a gross margin of 29.5% in 2023. However, this profitability largely depends on supply costs, fixed charges and competition:

  • Convenience food stores: average margin of 23%, often squeezed by higher logistics costs and frequent promotions to attract local customers.
  • Electronics and home equipment: average gross margin of 40%, underpinned by stable demand and high unit values.
  • Luxury sector: margins in excess of 50%, thanks in particular to high brand value and a target audience less sensitive to economic fluctuations.

In the wholesale sector, margins have fallen by 1.2 points between 2022 and 2023, due to a general increase in transport and logistics costs, which now account for almost 12% of company sales in this sector.

Regional impact: significant economic disparities

Retail performance is not uniform across France. Île-de-France accounts for 22% of total retail sales, followed by Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (12%) and PACA (13%). These regions benefit from high population density and purchasing power.

In contrast, regions such as Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (+1.8% growth between 2019 and 2023) and Bretagne (+2.1%) show more modest increases, despite stability linked to the importance of short circuits and increased loyalty from local consumers. The Hauts-de-France region, meanwhile, has suffered from a downturn in cross-border trade, with an estimated -3% drop in sales between 2022 and 2023.

The e-commerce boom: a structuring dynamic

Between 2019 and 2023, e-commerce grew by a dazzling +36%, reaching sales of 152 billion euros in 2023. Certain segments have particularly benefited:

  • Electronic products: 48% of total sales are now made online.
  • Fashion and apparel: 35% of sales go through digital platforms, increasing pressure on physical stores.
  • Food products: although representing only 9% of online sales, this segment is growing at a rate of +8% per year, driven by the boom in deliveries and drives.

Businesses that invest in digital technology are more profitable. According to INSEE, businesses that have invested more than 10% of their annual sales in digital transition have seen their margins grow by an average of +8% over the last three years.
